What are the Chicago suburbs lacking?
Are there suburban locations throughout the U.S that have amenities that we are missing out here in the Chicago suburbs?
We have malls, water parks, pro sports teams, a great cultural center in Chicago, etc. etc..
What are we missing, if anything?
It doesn't seem we are lacking much to me. On my list: It would be nice to have a few mountains for skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer. I'd like to see a few more casino's closer to home (I know that many would rather not have casino's at all).
What do you think?

I'd like more (or any!!) taverns in walking distance of home. One of lifes pleasures in hoisting a few with fellow members of the human race. These Internet sites have taken the place of the local tavern. But geez it was nice when you could walk 6 or 8 blocks have a few pints and talk, argue, laugh and cheer your team with likeminded souls and walk home. But damn the taverns are all "out there" away from where people live and only a fool would consider driving.

Chicago lacks topography, it's flat. Also Chicago's burbs are much more subdivision oriented than is preferable. Housing stock isn't that unique. These are minor complaints. When I think of the ultimate suburb, I think of Bellvue, WA.

Chicago lacks good Mexican food restaurants. We lived there for 1.5 years, and being originally from Texas, we were very dissatisfied with the Mexican food. Oh well.

They ALL lack a safe way to walk around. Many have NO sidewalks up to and around the malls. The car drivers act like if you're a pedestrian you are inconveniencing them if they have to wait for you to cross the street in front of them.
No way for any bicyclists to travel around in any safe manner.
There are good bike trails but I am talking on main roads.
No wonder we're all obese. WAY too car centric.

People who are pedestrians in the suburbs are usually assumed to be a mental case or a loner or something. Seriously, if you are walking across Golf Rd in a place like Schaumburg, that is definitely weird.

Most of the older North Shore suburbs are quite walkable, as are many of the older suburbs along the other Metra lines (places like Oak Park, River Forest, La Grange, La Grange Park, Cicero, Berwyn, Hinsdale, Flossmoor, etc.). And many suburbs have older sections or downtowns that are walkable, even though much of the newer development is not (places like Elmhurst, Arlington Heights, etc.)
