My girlfriend and I are moving out to the Chicago area this summer. We are in our late 20s and are used to living in apartment buildings in big cities. I am going to be attending graduate school at the University of Chicago and she is going to be working out in Hoffman Estates.

Boy, that's tough. I'd suggest looking at Oak Park/Forest Park/Berwyn. These are older, urban suburbs with lots of apartments, condos and a fair number of young singles. They are along the Eisenhower expressway so you have (relatively) easy access to both Hyde Park and Hoffman Estates. (Warning traffic along the Eisenhower is miserable during rush hour). Probably an hour by car for both of you.
