Hey there. If I wanted to take public transportation from Addison, Illinois to downtown Chicago...what would I do? Are there metra trains? Or would I drive to a subway station somewhere.

Thanks!

You would have to take the Metra from either Wood Dale or Villa Park. CTA trains don't go as far west as Addison...the closest place to catch one would probably be O'Hare.

Best is to go to Wood Dale, Itasca or Villa Park Metra. There are also PACE buses serving Addison, but I suspect they serve people working in Addison. Want to ride the CTA? I suggest driving down the Ike to Des Plaines Avenue (Forest Park) station. Catching the L at Rosemont would require going north then east, a lengthy trip.

There are two different Pace bus routes serving different parts of Addison.

Pace Route 711 takes you from the Wheaton Metra station to Addison.

Pace Route 715 takes you from the Glen Ellyn Metra station to Addison.

Click on the above links to find maps and schedules. Both routes run roughly once an hour during the day on weekdays, which is OK since Metra trains only run once an hour outside of rush hour.

The Wheaton and Glen Ellyn stations are on the Metra UP-West line. You can board this line at the Ogilvie Transportation Center on West Madison street in downtown Chicago, a few trains stop at the Kedzie station located at Kedzie and Carroll Ave in Chicago, and there is an Oak Park stop immediately adjacent to the Oak Park stop (the end of the line) on the CTA Green Line.
Click for more information.

Find your way to the Wood Dale station, transfer at Union Station to BNSF train. Takes a bit longer but at least you can use your monthly ticket from Wood Dale to ride to Cicero. Alternate: ride to Grand/Cicero and ride the 54 bus. Requires purchase of linkup, $55 a month, don't know if it's faster.

The various routes that are available via Pace, Metra, and CTA are now explorable on Google Maps. The trip will not be speedy, but it is doable -- https://goo.gl/maps/16w1D6xsFRz
