Are there any Chicago suburbs with a lot of character, subway access, and safe yet affordable?

Character meaning pedestrian-friendly and walkable...?

And what's your definition of "subway"? There are no "subways" anywhere in the 'burbs, except of course, if you want a five-dollar foot long....

I'd look into downtown Forest Park, provided you don't have any school-age kids. Depending on what you consider "affordable," your options expand substantially if you consider commuter access rather than CTA access.
Any reason why you won't consider the city proper?

What possible difference would it make whether the passenger rail service is powered by diesel locomotives on standard gauge rails or antiquated self-powered cars?
