Cicero and area
How safe is the area around Cicero and Homan/California and Lake St. It looks like it would be handy to the "el" for commuting to downtown and the rents seem somewhat cheaper that further out (like oak park or river forest). Are there good recreational facilities near by? Is Garfield Park good for running?

Uh...I'm not really an expert in that area, but I drive through it from time to time. It appears pretty rough. I would not run in that area, especially in off-hours.
If you are from out of town, I would highly recommend you investigate it further before making any decisions.
Maybe check out Berwyn?

1. This area is in the city, so you might want to check the Chicago forums. Search for Garfield Park
2. This area is not safe. There is a lot of violent crime. It is one of the most dangerous in the city, and that is the reason the rents are cheaper.

Look at the town of Cicero. Not the greatest town in Chicagoland, but much better then the west side of Chicago. There are some genuinely nice areas there. It's cheap, and you have access to the El and Metra.

Lake and Homan/Kedzie is the ghetto and it's in Chicago, not Cicero.
I go there once in a while for stuff and I don't reccomend it for new people... or anyone who can manage somewhere better.
Cicero is better then that area...
