Hi. I have never been to the Chicago area. I am being transferred to a job in Willow Springs and I will be commuting from the east side of Joliet. Should I be prepared for a bad commute? I will be traveling between 5:30 and 6:00 am and 5:30 and 6:00 pm. Mapquest says 35 minutes. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

I'm in Joliet too (near the mall) and my commute was to Clarendon Hills for work, which is a few miles west of Willow Springs. I would take I55 but I was on there around 8am during rush hour so of course it was always bumper to bumper and was late for work a lot. I would think that you would miss that traffic since you are leaving earlier.

Your commute home, however, will probably not be as smooth. Going south on I55, traffic seems to start around 4pm and is pretty heavy until 6pm or later. I thought when they opened a 3rd lane past Weber, it would help, but I still see it backed up at night. I would say it would take closer to an hour each way.

I try to avoid I-55 as much as possible. With your commute, I might even try to take Archer (171) home. It moves well for the most part, though I don't have experience at all hours.

Where are you on the east side, anyhow?

I will be in the Ingalls Park area I believe. Mapquest actually has me jumping on 355 for a piece then off onto Archer 171. How bad is 171 around 5:30pm? Would you avoid 355? Thanks for your help.

355 only seems to hairy around 55, and to the north, 88. To me, it seems like nobody really uses it on the extension area.

What made you want to move to that neighborhood? I don't think a lot of people coming to Joliet tend to pick there.

Just try to use IL-171 as much as possible and stay away from I-55. Shouldn't be a bad commute. Maybe 40 mins at most.

Another option, not well-known, is Metra's Heritage Corridor. Not many trains running, but it makes the trip in half an hour. At least worth considering during bad weather.
