Hi, we're moving to Vernon Hills (Deerpath area) and I was curious about the safety of the area. I read that there is some gang activity in the area, particularly in Mundelein. Does anyone know anything about this area? My child will be attending the schools in Hawthorne District 73, and I want to make sure that the area/schools are *very* safe and the quality of the education is excellent.

I live in Vernon Hills. We're in the Diamond Lake District 76 school district and my kids successfully went thru their grade school there and are currently attending Stevenson High school. The area is very safe. There is gang and drug activity everywhere - there is no "immune" community. Ironically, sometimes the more affluent communities have more drug activity because the money is available. Mundelein may be more economically diverse, but the schools are sound both financially and academically. The housing is affordable and the environment is rich with diversity. Good luck!
