Fox River Grove: opinions?
We are thinking of moving to Fox River Grove, mainly because the location is good for our jobs. However, a few long-time Northwest suburbanites we know (from Palatine and Rolling Meadows) insist that Fox River Grove would not be a good choice. What are they talking about? It seems like a small, sleepy community, sure, but I've heard the schools are OK and I've never heard about gang problems or crime problems in the area.
So what's up with Fox River Grove? Is there something wrong that we're not seeing?

Info on the "Grove"
The "Grove" is sleepy - I'll give you that much. It's claim to fame is the Annual Ski Jump that takes place in January and attracts ski jumpers ranging from the true novice to those working towards bigger and better. Most of the students attend the lone Fox River Grove Elementary and Middle School. High School age students attend Cary-Grove High School (in neighboring Cary), which is part of the Crystal Lake High School District, which does have a good reputation. I have not heard the same positive feedback regarding the K-8 schools in FRG. A small portion of FRG children attend Barrington schools and would have to be bused.
It's not that there is anything really wrong with FRG, there's just not anything really right with it at the moment. With the exception of the commercial development @ its eastern border (that does include a chain grocery store), there is very little commercial tax base to assist with the property taxes. Most residents travel to Barrington, Lake Zurich, Algonquin or Crystal Lake for other necessities. It is a stop on the Metra UP Northwest Line, but doesn't have as many stops as Barrington or Crystal Lake. Housing consists mostly of either former river type cottages that have been remodeled for year round living or larger (and much more expensive) new subdivision homes. I would suggest spending more time in the area to get a better feel for the community. You may find it's a great fit.
Good luck!

I agree with the other respondent. I lived in Cary for 10 years and mainly went thru "the grove" but thats about it. I am pretty sure they attend cary grove schools and they are very good. Its ok, if you live in the Picnic Grove subdivision, otherwise try Cary or Crystal Lake for more options. not much going on in the grove except the Ski ju mp

The Grove is fine. Your friends may be thinking of your driving time to work.

Gangs are everywhere. Fox River Grove is an EXCELLENT choice to raise a family. By where you live you have the "opportunity" for your children to go to Barrington Schools or Fox River Grove schools. If you live in the FRG School District you are less likely to have problems than the majority of other schools districts. With only 2 schools in our district we do not have the problems that other school districts have. No there might not be alot of places to shop but that's what I love about living here. It's like living in the country if we need things we go to the "city" to get them(ie, Crystal Lake or Lake Zurich or Dundee(Spring Hill Mall). I love the down home feel Fox River Grove has to offer, everything you absolutely need is within walking distance. With new stores, resturants and convienent stores, Fox River Grove is an upincoming town. Just watch us grow. I am so happy I chose to raise my kids in Fox River Grove.

We prefer the area just north of there that offers alot of the same amenities. The Lake Villa area offers great schools and family friendly environment. If you are looking to stay within a price range consistent with the Fox River Grove area, Round Lake Heights is a small community that offers Lake Villa Schools with a family friendly environment and plenty of diversity.

Lake Villa area? That certainly doesnt sound like a reasonable work commute if they are seeking FRG because of easy commute to their jobs.
