How long have you been married? Oh, you're single? Then there isn't much excitement around Bannockburn area. Some towns don't even let you park on the street after dark. Some singles live in some place like Bucktown and ride the Metra up to Deerfield, possibly stationing a car at Deerfield (I believe overnight parking allowed there). A bit longer than 30 minutes, but you can relax on the train.

There would be little reason to consider a suburb that is not adjacent to Bannockburn for this poster...

I am moving from Ohio for a job in Bannockburn and looking for recommendations on where to live. I have a few friends who live downtown but they don't know the suburbs so am looking for help in learning more! Downtown is too far of a commute and although I love the independent walkability of the city ultimately not interested in the daily traffic noise and stress of driving a car and taking 20 min to drive 5 blocks for groceries (not willing to give up my car).

I am a mid 30's single girl with a dog who is over the party/nightlife lifestyle and looking for a nice community.

Thoughts on what I'm looking for:
Prefer a commute not more than 30 min to work
Friendly people-a community with clubs and activities where non-locals are welcomed
Nice parks/outdoor activities
Place where people are outside walking dogs or chatting with neighbors
Affordable housing (approx 300k-400k for single family home)
Decent school district b/c resale value but not a primary concern

Any help/advice to guide me in the right direction is appreciated
When you guys give recommendations, you might want to pay attention to what the OP is actually looking for instead of turning this into a debate about if the suburbs have enough options that the OP isn't even looking for. I'm not familiar with the area around Bannockburn, but Chet usually gives good advice, so I'd start with his suggestions.

Pop, if you do not mind, how about sharing your thoughts and opinions with the forum instead of exclusively via PM's? Helps the community in addition to the individual.

If walking to restaurants, theater, coffee shop is important- try Arlington Heights. A smaller home, condo or townhouse will fit your budget. A smaller home with a yard for the dog, within a few blocks of downtown could be fun. For the burbs it is. Closer to work, I second Deerfield. Also look at Libertyville, Vernon Hills, Buffalo Grove. We're in Arlington Heights 2 blocks off of Lake Arlington AHPD - Lake Arlington (http://www.ahpd.org/Parks&Facilities/LakeArl/LakeArlington.html - broken link), which is great for jogging, walking and mild mannered cycling. Our neighborhood has LOTS of dog and non-dog walkers. Only downside is we're not walking distance to downtown AH or the library. But the Lake is and after 18 years it is still a huge source of enjoyment for me and the family

I empathize with your desire to live in one of the surrounding cities/suburbs of Chicago. I lived in Streeterville and then LP and it was so hard to get around or find parking when driving. I wanted a dog but didn't want a dog to have to be in an apartment most of the time and not have a fenced yard to run around in. We are considering moving back to Chicago and even though I loved the city, we will probably go to the burbs because I want to be able to drive and park easily and provide our dogs with a fenced yard for exercise. I can't provide info about the burbs since I lived in the city. But I can tell you that I found downtown/Streeterville/LP/Lakeview not car or dog friendly.

I really appreciate the feedback and suggestions. I'm not so worried about the bars and public transportation since I don't care to go clubbing and I'll have my car.

Reality is a nice community where I can go out with friends for a drink at a local restaurant, have options to be outside and walk my dog, and be able to buy a decent home is all I am looking for.

When I was looking up some of the suburbs online I was surprised by the population which made me worry. I come from a town of 35,000(largest “city” is 60miles/1 hour away) and a lot the Chicago suburbs I was looking up listed a population well under that so I didn't know if they'd have any type of a mall or home depot or options for restaurants.

I know it is hard to compare the 2 places and articulate on-line but I do appreciate all the suggestions and value everyone’s input.

You might want to look into Naperville. Its a bit far out, but has Metra access (two stations), including and Express line. Its got a thriving downtown, all the shopping you could possibly imagine, and is safe as safe can get.

Trust me there is no lack of any shopping or anything else related to retail in the entire region. While some towns might have populations that appear small, things are part of larger whole. The entire region is pretty much fully developed for hundreds of square miles.
