Good Afternoon All:

A close relative of mine is moving to the area in the next 4 months and he is interested in touring a property located in the Vernon Hills subdivision near Deerfield Rd and Portwine Rd in Riverwoods.

Does anyone have any experience with this area/subdivision, namely:

1. Is the area free of any burdensome airline noise (this is a very important point and a deal breaker)? Seems far enough out from Ohare that this should not be an issue, but you never know if the area is right under a busy flight path leading into O'hare.

2. The subdivision looks far enough away from I94 that this should be a non-issue, but curious about the general noise levels seeping in from surface roads.

3. Does anyone know if the water quality in the area is good? Looks like it has public sewer but well water.

Thanks to all in advance!

That area is miles north of O'Hare. It is not on any direct axis to any of the take-off or landing patterns. Airplane noise from O'Hare would not be an issue.

Similarly that area is not near enough to I-94 to be an issue.

Generally the leafy trees tend to attenuate road noise pretty well, should be pretty quiet.

If that area is served by well water the quality of that will depend greatly on the specifics of the well, with most having only moderate levels of minerals. Standard whole house filters generally bring well water in that area up to very good quality for both household uses and drinking.

Funny how your concerned about air traffic
noise miles from ohare in riverwoods, yet in your other post your considering a
move to bensenville.

Hey Lakecountylifer, not sure the reason for such negative remarks?

I thought I was quite clear I was asking this question on behalf of a family member moving here from out of state who is very concerned over noise levels (his new job is located in Deerfield) who has asked me for advice to help him narrow down his choices, and not for my own move.

I am not very familiar with this area in Riverwoods so I thought I could leverage the fine folks on this forum to help me out.

Distance itself is not always a good indicator of possible flight noise. I have been to a friend's house in Hoffman Estates near Beverly Rd and I90 several times (which is a good 25 miles NW of Ohare) and I swear you would think her house was in Wood Dale.

It was amazing how low the jets were flying through despite the sizable distance from Ohare (my friend confirmed this area near I90 seems to have morphed into a designated flight pattern into Ohare since the runway reconfiguration a few years ago) and the jet noise was quite noticeable (not unbearable mind you but still noticeable), even that far out in the suburbs.

Indeed, I counted maybe 10 planes in just the hour we sat outside that were circling overhead.

That does not really bother me at all having lived in Chicago for many years in my earlier days (as you correctly pointed out I was looking in Bensenville so clearly it was not an issue for me), but for others it can be a bigger deal.

So, instead of being so judgmental how about adding something positive to the discussion? Wouldn't that be so much more constructive then unwarranted criticism; trust me you will feel better about yourself in the morning!

Thank you!

Be careful about flooding. Even if the house is away from the Des Plaines river, some lower lying lots seem to collect standing water more than others.

Not sure I follow? I think you are agreeing with me (always a good thing), but if you are also accusing me of also being the wizard behind the curtain of another user ID, well that's just plain wrong. I barely remember my login for one user ID, much less two

Do I really sound like someone else on the board?

I always thought my writing voice was fairly distinctive, but perhaps not if I am being thought of as being a double agent
