Not sure if this is true, but my girlfriends uncle said they rezoned Mokena so that the black part of the town was going to one school, while the more upscale white part of town was going to another. Anyone have any comments, or facts about that?

I've lived in Aurora near Fox valley - some would call this Naperville too, for 3 years now. I'm an AA and I haven't experienced anything that would make me take notice. I have a son in school and the classes are diverse- more whites than others but diverse still.
I nor my fiance have experienced any abnormal traffic stops by police. Like other posters have said Naperville police do nit-pick b/c they have nothing else to do...but I think I'd rather for them to have nothing else to do- but that's just me

I assure you that I've been pulled over too for no good reason.I'm white. Not that it matters.Sometimes cops just do that.I think it is a mistake and a bad habit just to assume everything that happens is racial.I agree with the "Peace" part.

I recently moved out of Mokena. I never noticed that Mokena had a black part of town. It seemed to be mostly caucasion to me. I don't mean that in any kind of negative way, that's just what I noticed about Mokena's demographics. And I thought all of Mokena goes to Lincolnway anyway?

Mokena has two elementary school districts, 159 and 161. But seeing as the % of white students in the elementary schools are 91.3 and 89.3 respectively, I don't see how one has all the black students and the other doesn't.

Mokena is all white, so unless they have some sort of predictive model showing where African-Americans are most likely to move if they want to live in Mokena, this is impossible.
One Mokena elementary school has 1.9% blacks and the other has 1.3% blacks, so if they in fact tried to do this, they didn't do a very good job of it.

How reassuring.
I'd say class plays as big a role as race in the area. I guess its potatoes - potahtos, but there can a lot of disdain for "outsiders" in general in certain communities, especially when one enclave has held office for a long time. (cough...Blue Island...cough)

Most people are not racists, they are classists. I have never looked at a black person who is wearing a suit and tie and decided I didn't want to be around him. However, I fear for my life sometimes when I am walking in the worser parts of downtown Chicago and I see black youth walking around in gangbanger clothing. Isn't because I don't like the color of their skin, but I am a realist and realize that poor people have different lifestyles from those in upper brackets, and resort to different measures of obtaining money than the rest of us.
If you live in an upper middle to upper class area, you probably won't encounter racism. The racism you may encounter may come off as racist, but it is really what I call classism in disguise.

Good post Jak, I think thats probably very true. A young black man in a suit and tie, walking down the street will not draw the attention a "gang banger" type will. I for one, say God Bless the police. They have been a God sent so many times its a shame that bad apples on the force spoil it for the many that have noble intentions.
