I am moving from Florida to Chicago in the fall to attend Roosevelt University.
I am in the process of finding a place to live, and I am wondering about what neighborhoods are a good place to live. I am looking for a place that is not too far away from the school, and I am also looking for a place that is safe.

Suggestions would be great!

You need to give more info like how much rent you can afford.

I would prefer not to spend more than $600 on rent. Anything below this would be nice...

That ain't gonna happen anywhere close to Roosevelt. You would be better off finding a roommate situation.

I realize this. I'm not looking for a place of my own, I have been looking for a roomate situation.

I am just curious as to what neighborhoods are good, safe places to live somewhat nearby.

Roosevelt is downtown. Basically anywhere downtown and most areas directly adjacent to it is fine.

You should make a trip up here and look around yourself. Your idea of safe might be different than others.

Also, what is your idea of "somewhat nearby" or "not too far away?" One mile? Two miles? Three miles? Three blocks?

We could just list a whole bunch of safe neighborhoods (there are literally dozens), but what good does that do you if none of them are in your price range? Safety usually comes at a premium in Chicago. And when safety is inexpensive, you typically have to sacrifice convenience. There are hundreds of thousands of better-informed people trying to find that cheap apartment in a safe neighborhood, so you really need to give us as much information as possible to get any good information in return.

What length of commute is acceptable to you?
Other than safetey and convenience, what else do you want in your neighborhood?
Do you want to be in the middle of it all with other young people around you? Or would you consider living in a quiet, more family-oriented neighborhood?
Is access to nightlife important to you?
Do you require peace and quiet?
Etc...

I like the graphic presentation of the stats, but I feel he kind of botched the analysis. He does put Uptown and Hyde Park in perspective, but is wrong about the Loop. The Loop crime stats look so terrible because the Loop has many hundreds of thousands of people passing through it every day, but only a small number of actual residents. So the likelihood of being a crime victim in the Loop is quite a bit lower than these charts imply.
