and you have the audacity to call Theriot overpaid?
Yes, he is overpaid. But since he isn't grossly overpaid (maybe a million, plus whatever he gets in arbitration) he was trade bait to a contender. The Cubs need to dump salary and nobody will touch the guys you listed with a 10-foot pole.

2011 Cubs have 9 average players on the books for $109 million, plus Soto will get a raise. Going from 2.6 mil plus in Theriot to 460k in Blake DeWitt is a nice salary trade-off...and DeWitt is only 24 and under the Cubs control for a few years.

Sorry, math mistake it's "only" $103 million...

And Soto and Marmol are arb. eligible.

Well with any luck maybe they'll adjust ticket prices to match expectations. Then maybe us working stiffs can actually afford to go to a game or two for the first time in about a decade.

Cubs got screwed with the Samardzija contract. Talk about overpaying.

I'll preface this by pointing out I'm a Sox fan but I also love and follow the goings-on re baseball in general.

The Cubs window was 2008...the Trib made a bunch of back-loaded deals (which the new owner would have to pay down the road) for one big push to greatly increase the value of the team. Ending the drought would have been worth tens, maybe hundreds of millions in the sale. It almost worked too, and the Cubs were a better team than the one that showed up in the NLDS...but anything can happen in a short series. Now Cubs fans are going to have to suffer through some lean times, as Ricketts is realizing that he doesn't have a lot of room to maneuver money-wise, after paying Soriano 18mil per year until he's 38, rehabbing the ballpark, etc. What a mess.

Wow, I just had a look at the payroll. Dang.

I think what would sting the most is the Soriano signing. That guy is going to be paid well for 3 more years. At least Fukudome is off the books after next year, and then you could slide Tyler Colvin into his spot for pennies on the dollar.

I've been in a ticket pool for over 10 years, and I can honestly say this is the first year that the play of the team has been a bigger factor impacting how few games I chose to go to. They just keep screwing up fundamental baseball - running the bases like idiots, etc.

I'm not expecting any amazing changes any time soon, but I'm a lifer by accident of geography, so whatchagonnado...

I still think they went to hell in a handbasket when they stopped having the bleachers be day-of-game sales only. Oh, and they stopped letting us punk kids sit on the rafters with standing room only tickets.
