I was listening to WGN today and it is predicted by 2011 1 out of 7 people in Chicago will be on food stamps. Did you ever see this coming? RP

The Sun-Times had a story today reporting that 1 in 6 Illinois residents is already on food stamps.

Did I see this coming? Sure, a couple of years ago when the bottom fell out of the economy. But you look at the overall trend: static or shrinking wages, rising food prices due to inflation and market speculation, agribusiness management looking for quarterly profit and not long term growth, the explosive rise of fresh food prices compared to packaged... I could go on, but you get the idea. The situation's out of control.

Our daughter lives in Chicago. It's really hard to believe almost 17% of the population is on food stamps. We moved from IL to CO in 2007. RP

I think it already is 1 in 7. Probably more than that.

A lot of the lower middle class is sinking into poverty. I've watched it happen to family memebers before my eyes. I'm not at all surprised by this.

A significant number of my friends here in the city are on foodstamps. I dont blame them at all, either.

Before i finally found a decent-paying job, i thought about going on foodstamps but could never bring myself to do it. Always seemed shameful to me.

If i lost my job, though, id be on them so fast nowadays.

and remember, a number of full-time Wal-Mart employees qualify.

Quite the "company store" set-up they have going there.
