In many ways you have a child of the perfect age to move into either a neighborhood school district in Chicago or try the Magnet system. There are a decent number of good elementary schools in Chicago, a few are neighborhood schools but many are magnet or gifted schools. If you have a 3 or 4 year old you can sign up for the CPS tuition based preschool classes at a good magnet school to get a feel for how the crazy magnet/charter/gifted system works in CPS. Bell, Nettlehorst, Ravenswood, Audubon, and others are good ones to check out. Check out the CPS site to find the attendance boundaries for these schools and see how they match up with your commutes.

Sending your child to the tuition based preschool of a good magnet elementary school doesn't mean they are promised a spot in that school, but you need to talk to the principle of each school to get a feel for how they run things. Check out the NPN forums (http://www.npnparents.org/discus/discmain.php - broken link) (there is a fee) for some good advice. It is full of parents who actually send their children to different public and private Chicago schools.

I never understand why people don't do this research before accepting the offered salary and benefits package.
