I have a 10 hour layover in chicago so I was thinkin about going downtown and getting some food and walking around a bit. I'm familiar with the city and downtown area but I've never been to chicago by airplane. I'm just wondering the commute times I should expect from the airport to downtown and back using the blueline (i think?).

Default You have to plan "worst case" especially off hours...

If the blue line is being worked on they do stop trains and try to but you aon bus instead. That can really mess with you ability to enjoy the Loop or other areas.

The consensus is that barring any tie-ups the blue line takes about 40 minutes from O'Hare to the heart of the Loop, but even a little delay at each of the stations can easily push that to over an hour. Rush hour ads some time for the shear movement of people on platforms / entering / exiting.

Assuming adhere to TSA guidelines you should still have over six hours to kill, depending on time of day. That strikes me as about right if you land in early afternoon and have to fly out evening. Frankly if you land early morning you might be disappointed by how little there is to do when most people are at work...

It would take you 40 to a little over 40 minutes on the Blueline from O'Hare Airport to Downtown & back.

For food you might be better off looking at restaurants outside of downtown. Check out places in Logan Square, Wicker Park/Bucktown, and West Town. Most should be easily accessible by the Blue Line. Longman and Eagle, Belly Shack, Chilapan, and Mado are all great places.

What sort of food are you looking for and at what time of day? There are hundreds, if not thousands, of options along the Blue line.

I would give it 2 hours roundtrip including waiting times and getting to and from the train.
