My boyfriend and I are looking to relocate to the Chicago area sometime in the next few months. We both are recent graduates with decent jobs looking for a safe, fun place to live. We both enjoy trying new restaurants and bars and I like to shop. The main problem we are having is trying to figure out the best place to live since he will be commuting to Elgin, and I will be commuting to the Merchandise Mart downtown. For right now we want an apartment or a house to rent with a garage if possible (I know that garages hard to come by, but he does a lot of car restoration type work and would prefer one if we can find one.) I have heard that Arlington Heights has a nice city atmosphere with a lot of things to do. I am also considering something in the Schamburg area even though I know that that area has more of a "burbs" feel. I would like to keep my commute to downtown as minimal as possible. I would like it to be under 1 hour and I am willing to take the trains and mass transit to get downtown. He would also like a minimal commute, and will be more than likely driving. I have heard that traffic out that way is horrendous, so he might consider taking mass transit too. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I am from St. Louis and he is from Peoria and we aren't fully familiar with the Chicago area and it's traffic patterns.

Arlington Heights is a good bet though a little pricey and the restaurant scene is mainly chain operations. The commuter train leaves you off about four blocks from the Mart. Its also a reasonable commute to Elgin.

You may also want to consider Roselle and Hoffman Estates. In Chicago, you may want to look at Jefferson Park for reasonable transportation for you both.

If you're going to work at the Mart I'd highly recommend taking the train down--you're only a few block walk from the stations.

Depending where you husband is working, you may want to look at the train locations and schedule. Metra - Welcome to Metra

like Manigault said, Arlington Heights is a great choice, decent downtown area, close to Woodfield Mall.
