Not sure how accurate almost six yearr old information on a neigborhood is.
I take it you have no idea about the Mayne Stage/Act One Cafe
and the recent Morse streetscape or the new bar Chuckies.
You also probably have no idea about Reside On Morse and the New Condos in the converted four plus one at morse and greenview or the other new building at morse and greenview.

And you probably dont know about the Common Cup as well.

My family bought a large apt building in the area and we have been
renovating it and have been in the neigborhood SINCE 2005, so ahem um yeah,
Your impression of the hood in 2005 is spot on,
but um yeah, kinda out of date to say the least. As it is now almost 2011

Its also odd that someone would create an account to pass on
5-6 year old information

I hate these threads...you will be fine just keep your head about you...it's not exactly crime ridden but just watch your back carry yourself well etc...
I've never seen any sketchy activities in Rogers Park...most outsiders will see the africans and the jamaicans (aka black people) and lock their doors n roll the windows up. Feel it out for yourself an outsider's opinion on these things is pretty useless.

According to well over half of the people i went to high school with in the suburbs, the neighborhood im from which has tree lined streets and million dollar homes is the ghetto because they see black people at public transit stops.

I find that hard to believe. I have seen some level of sketchy activities in every neighborhood in Chicago.

I usually wouldn't help to resuscitate a nearly three year-old thread, but I was a part of daily life in Rogers Park from 2003 until 2008. During that time, I had one friend raped in an alley, another friend's car broken into, caught drug dealers making a deal on the hood of my car, been followed, watched someone's purse get snatched (and the crook ran off too fast for us to chase after him) at the Loyola El and four of my friends mugged in the daytime up and down Sheridan, all of these instances occurring north of Devon.

Such things can happen in any neighborhood and blah blah blah. But, RP has several factors contributing to it having a higher crime rate, including Loyola U and a higher population density. Undergrads going about on their own in the big city for the first time make easy targets, and anywhere with a high population density means the amount of crime will be higher.

You're only as safe as the person standing next to you.

I have seen my share of crime in RP too,
(I myself was stupid and was out late at night alone
and I was mugged)
but it has gotten better of late. I guess we could all
focus on the negative forever and forget about the positive too.
I have had to kick gangbangers and drugdealers off my street.
They used to hangout right by where I park, but I kept bugging the
landlord there and they put of a metal fence and they
cant sit there anymore.

Prostitutes tried hanging out on my corner, but persistent
calling of police and whatnot and they arent there anymore.

If some people want to continue to obsess about the negative of
Rogers Park be my guest. The bad elements there are being forced out
a building at a time and they hate that the neigborhood is getting better
and they would do anything in their power to hold it back.

The Morse Theatre/Mayne Stage suffered fire damage from an arsonist
who broke in back in 08 before it opened, but that didnt stop
them from fixing the damage and still opening.

I think a balanced view makes the most sense.

You are only safe as the person right next to you.
So if you see sketchy people avoid them, and cross the street,
have no fear of rascism being accused of you.
There are those who have evil eyes and will always
think the worst of you no matter what.
If your gut says this isnt right, well get away from them
cross the street and dont go out late at night by yourself,
if you do this in general you will be fine.

Thought I would hijack this thread so I don't **** anybody off with another rogers park thread. We are thinking of buying a place on greenleaf between glenwood and sheridan. my wife teaches off the thorndale stop. i work downtown. we don't have a car.

we have walked around there 3 times in the past week (day and night) and it seems safe, but i wonder what it is like in the summer? could our parents come visit?

Well just in case you are still checking for an answer,
wasnt be a computer/had any time lately till now.

I think its okay in RP. Its an improving neigborhood,
that area you speak of is very dense, alot of courtyard apartments.
You are near the lake, near public transportation,
Morse is coming around very nicely lately.

Check out Broken Heart Rogers Park,
and I keep track of Rogers Park development
on Skyscrapercity forum the Chicago section
under the Neigborhood Development News.

Good neigborhood. Otherwise I wouldnt be living here.
Its not perfect. Dont walk around late at night by yourself
you might get mugged.

I think your parents could visit you, sure.
My parents visit me.
Things do heat up in the summer just like
anywhere in the city, each year/summer
does have some craziness but
I know this will make some people go insane,
but the neigborhood each year I have been here
has been getting better, less people yelling at night
and doing whatever silliness like shooting is down,
but there is some chronic gang problems that
we have been fighting with some success.....

I think that would be okay.
There is scattered site low income housing
in Rogers Park, so just FYI
there is a building at Pratt and Bosworth
a bit west of there that
doesnt have the best elements around.

But overall the area is okay.
Better than before,
perfect without problems? Nope.

You would be a short distance from the Morse EL stop.
I make litter rounds from Wayne and Farwell
to Farwell and Greenview then to Morse and then
back to Wayne. So its not on my Litter route,
but its close by.
