Just get a monthly pass. I don't trust the CTA with my bank account or credit card info.

If you live anywhere near a brown, or red stop (northern), you probably could get away without a car. Probably Blue too, though it gets a little less dense further west. I'm from Michigan, aka Car Heaven, but I dropped it when I moved here. The only downside really is groceries or large items, but I have friends with cars and it's not too hard to coordinate a pick up. $86 a month is sort of great as gas is waaay too much right now.

On the flip side, I live in Edgewater and I can count the number of times I've been to South Loop or further South. (I work directly North of the river). A split cab ride isn't bad some nights, but it can be quite a trek on public transit.

The CTA has had my info for years and I've never once had a problem or even the whiff of a problem. I don't know anyone or haven't heard of a single person having such a problem either.

I don't know what it's like to be a baller OR drive a Mercedes.

I kept my car when I moved here, it's expensive and a pain in the a$$ really. I don't use it anymore, outside of my job (I travel outside the city a lot). Because of the car I didn't learn the bus/train system half as fast or as well as I should have. And I'm "the friend with a car" which gets old real quick.

I will say that if you want to live carless in Chicago, live in an area where you have a couple walkable options for the daily conveniences. Since the service cuts last Jan, taking most bus routes in non-peak times sucks.

The way it is looking they probably are going to cut again. They waited until after the November elections to spring it out.

I guess you don't mind them being able to track you do you? It is about privacy. Before you know it they will sell your boarding and riding habits to companies so they can market you with spam.

As for problems with the Chicago Card and how you may have never heard of someone having a problem with them:

5,000 riders were hit by overbilling on CTA card - Chicago Tribune

Rider: Why doesn't my CTA card work? - RedEye
