Hey! I just moved to wicker park a week ago, and I know a few people around the city but not really people my age who I could go out to bars and clubs with. I am a very outgoing person, so I feel like I could meet people if I went to a bar by myself, but I've never done it before and want to make sure I'm safe/non-awkward. I'm also planning on joining meetup and taking some classes, maybe joining a sports team, but I kind of want to check out the bar scene around here before my girlfriends visit in a few weeks and I thought it'd be nice to meet a few people around. Any advice for me? Where I should go? What I should do?

You have a good game plan. You would be better off to go out at happy hour to start. It isn't as awkward. Sit at the bar, people will talk to you. It is a lot less awkward for a girl to be sitting at the bar by herself than standing in the corner. Same goes for us guys. If you want to go at night, then I would recommend a lower key bar not a bar/club. This makes conversation much easier.

Thanks! I actually live right near that area. I went swig, pint, nick's biergarten, flatiron and one more bar i can't remember with some of my friends the first few nights I was here. Any others you'd recommend I should check out?

Gee, I live in Wicker Park and almost never go to bars because I don't drink alcohol and I hate beer. I try meeting women while taking a bike ride, visiting the park, or going to the grocery.

I do not see a problem with going to bars by yourself, as long as you take the normal precautions while you are out and about...just as long as you do not communicate that you are "alone", as this might draw the wrong people. The area around Milwaukee and Damen is relatively "safe", but I do see some sketchy people around there from time to time.

No, Violet Hour is not conducive to meeting people. They seat everyone in small private areas, there is zero chance of talking to anyone except the people you went in with.
