If you are considering moving here, then my advice is come here on vacation, rent a car, check out the city on your own, drive around in it, see what its all about. Experience our rush hours, our food, our expenses, our media, and see if its all for you. I can say I like it here as well as someone can say they hate it, but what good does that do you? Everyone is entitled to their opinion and you may or may not like it here. Best time to visit here for a \"fantasyland\" glimpse of Chicago is now, reality? Come to Chicago in February or early March and see if you can handle that as winter is in full swing then and the people tend to be suffering from sunlight deprevation and severe cabin fever by that point. |

The nice thing about this country is that people are virtually free to relocate to another locale if the one that they are in doesn't suit them. There are some aspects of Chicago that I am not crazy about. However, compared to many other cities, Chicago has alot to offer someone that is willing to tap into its resources. And iIf the resources are not appealing to you, leave. Btw, not everyone that lives in Chicago cares about the CUBS and the SOXS.(Go BEARS...lol) |

Well the advice about coming to check it out before yo move here makes sense...
But I think if people are considering Chicago, they are aware about its horrendous winters. Chicago does have so much more to offer than say Houston, it is just sooo much colder. It's a tradeoff. You can't have it all. Personally I prefer the warmth of the sunbelt. But there is really a lot lacking in Southern cities as far as a well rounded experience. They are very sprawly from the downtown out, with little "old town" areas. Sure, Chicagoland is spawling too, but there are plenty of old neighborhoods and older cities that wind together the fabric of the region. Chicago is anything but vanilla, where are you living??? There are also many diverse suburbs. Of course there is self segregation, as there is across most of the country. There is also plenty of reverse racisim as you proved. It seems that there are a lot of resentful trolls who practice this reverse racism and bash the community because they are jaded. This doesn't reflect on the community that much, more on yourself. Chicago is not the best city in the country, but it is pretty nice. The way you describe it, it makes Badgdad look nice. Your post is not informative or accurate, it is just an indicator of your unhappiness, which you will find wherever you live. |

I've come to the conclusion that there is not necessarily a "best city". Each city and metropolitan area seems to have its set of advantages and disadvantages. NYC sure has a lot of cultural options (definitely a pro), but wow is that metro congested and expensive (definite cons). At least NYC has good public transit (a pro in my book). Los Angeles is reputed to have horrendous traffic and lacks public transit (clearly a con), but could be a great town if you're in the media or film industry (a pro if you work in that industry), Chicago seems to balance out a lot of things with a diverse economy spanning from the financial sectors to ad agencies to manufacturing companies, reasonable cost of living for its size, and has some decent public transit options such as Metra, etc. It may not be the most culturally diverse metro in the world, but it definitely has a lot going for it. The winters do suck at times (the few bitter bitter cold days that we get can be quite rough), other than that it's alright as long as you layer up. Keep in mind that out in NYC it gets ALMOST as damn cold as it does here in the winter, so it's not like they exactly have us beat in the weather department. The south has warm weather all year round, but in some southern cities it gets TOO hot in the summer, and culturally might not have AS much to offer for certain folks. For others, it may be just the right geographic area (ie. Florida, Georgia, Texas, Arizona, etc.). So I guess in the end it's different strokes for different folks. My advice to people would be to find out what kind of lifestyle you're into, and then try moving to the metro that fits your needs and preferences the best.

I had to do a double take on the original thread to make sure the OP wasn't talking about Boston! seems like a lot of the complaints she has about Chicago are similar to those mentioned of Boston (ie, the horrible public transportation system, the racism, the extreme Sox mania (though Sox of a different color of course), the gays, etc). these complaints are completely over exaggerated for Boston, and even though I don't live there yet, I believe they are over exaggerated for Chicago.

as reppin mentioned above, each city has pros and cons, but people have high and unreasonable expectations about big cities. its like the red sox syndrome, high expectations with mediocre results.
