A non-issue at best.

For the most part, yes, though New York has two more metro areas (Buffalo and Rochester) with over 1 million people, and at least two others (Albany and Syracuse) with over half a million. After Chicago, the largest metro area in Illinois is the Quad Cities with 380,000, part of which is in Iowa.

The biggest difference to me, though, is that rural Upstate New York has lots of beautiful mountains, lakes, and huge forests, while rural Downstate Illinois is nearly all farm land.

Once you get north of I-90 ( the Albany/Syracuse/Rochester/Buffalo line), the population really peters out, and you get into the deep forest, along with some dairying and paper milling ( the stench!), and the Adirondecks...

No.

NYC vs Upstate NY is not like Chicago vs Illinois, whatsoever.

Upstate NY without NYC still has over 7 million people, so itd finish 13th in population. I dont think most people realize this. Theres still very much a state with a number of mid-sized cities (Buffalo and Rochester have over a million in metro, Albany is close) other than NYC.

NYC and Upstate are like a 60/40 split. Chicago and Illinois are like 80/20.

Geographically, NYS is flat on the western side, mountainous to the north and south (relative to I90), river valleys, hills in the eastern and southeastern part.

Floyover Country refers to the U.S. interior. The Midwest, including Chicago, is obviously part of Flyover Country.

And what is the Big 3? You mean NYC, LA, and Chicago? Three totally different cities, and why only 3? Why not "Big 4" or whatever? Chicago is certainly much closer to Houston than to NYC in terms of size and economy. I could see a "Big 2", because NYC and LA are much bigger than anywhere else, but "Big 3" seems arbitrary, because there isn't a clear-cut #3 (though Chicago is probably the best option for #3, though you could go for DC or Bay Area, certainly).

And, no, people from Chicagoland generally aren't pro-Illinois. Most of Illinois kinda sucks, IMO.

Only a person from Upstate NY would say that.

My family is originally from Brooklyn and Long Island. Many of which make the move Upstate for better COL while also reaping the benefits NYS has to offer (education).

MassVt? You live in a single-wide or double-wide?

Okay, Mr. Literalist, if you're going by population, fine. In that case, the Illinois portion of Chicagoland vs. the rest of Illinois (8.7 million of 12.9 million) is a 67/33 split, not 80/20.

For the rest of us, who are not simpleton morons, we were speaking of cultural influence and impact, in which case NYC to Upstate New York is about 80/20 and Chicago to Downstate Illinois is about 90/10.
