Hello,

I am moving to Chicago very soon and I have a few questions about the social life there. Bascially, I am interested in getting to know and mingling within the social circuit of well-to-do, elite, politically-involved and civicly minded Chicagoans.

1. Where do I find Chicago's society pages?
2. Which events do you recommend that I attend to make a name for myself in this social circuit?
3. Who are some of the major women in Chicago's social circuit?
4. What are some major women's and generally philanthropic organizations?

Thanks!

PS If you find my post repulsive and you are interested in responded with disparaging remarks, think again and don't waste your breath.

No offense, but I am thinking that if you have to ask, you will probably not be welcomed into that social circuit unless you knew someone personally that was somehow connected. Thus, a better way to get into ANY social circle is to try to find other people who are somehow connected. Even if it is a distant connection, you can work your way through and eventually get invited to a social event where you will have a reason (and someone to be there with) to go so it doesn't seem like you are a "wannabe"...Just a suggestion.

You should also post this on the Suburban Forum, you may get more answers... Monied suburbs publish local magazines (e.g. North Shore, Quintessential Barrington, etc.) that list some city and suburb society events.

Big money talks and can gain you entry into the right country clubs, Hospital Balls, political events, or the Junior League which is one of the major women's organizations. If you don't have the money, then you'll have to network harder by volunteering for charitable work often involving events for hospitals, children, and women's shelters. Attending the right church often helps too. I'm not going to list names, but obviously many of the key women are spouses of the CEO's of the top Chicago companies.

P.S. I neither endorse this behaviour nor am I repulsed, I have just spent many years observing it. Though sometimes self-serving, these type of activities tend to have a very positive, philanthropic affect.

Chicago is a BIG town. The very wealthy are found in very private social clubs, expensive VIP social events, private country clubs and exclusive neighborhoods, as well as church, grocery stores and at work. The not "quite so wealthy" are more reachable. The chicago high society is a ladder system and unless you have great wealth you cannot just pop-in unannounced to say hello.

If it were me I would look into Junior League. The very wealthy woman in most large cities is expected to be philanthropic as well as willing to volunteer to help with worthy projects such as the Junior League store.

Good Luck.
