Hi Guys,
I will be working as a 4th yr med. student at St. Bernards Hospital in South Chicago. I hear it is near Englewood. I do not know anything about Chicago, but from reading several online forums, I have read that Englewood is an unsafe area.

Can anyone please tell me how the area is in and around St. Bernards Hospital? It is located on West 64th Street I believe. I will only be at the hospital from 8am to 5pm and should be out of there by 5 30pm at the latest.

My concern is about my safety and car vandalism. I am debating right now whether to bring my car or just rent one. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The hospital does have a security force and parking for staff. Odds of any individual car being vandalized are pretty low, the physicians and other staff predominately drive to the facility, many in the standard luxury cars. Kennedy-King College is a few blocks west, and they also have a security force. This is a pretty well policed section of Englewood. It would be pretty silly to rent a car unless your normal ride is so totally pimped out it is a rolling magnet for crime -- custom rims are not favored by many physicians, most of them are more likely to drive an older BMW or Mercedes sedan than some high power coupe...

You may want to buy a car. St. Bernards is near the Red Line and the Green Line but it is not a place to be on public trans for newcomers to the city. Plus, as a 4th year you may be catching some weirdly scheduled hours at the hospital.

It is fairly close to the new Kennedy-King college campus, however. That has made some changes in the area.

If you are wondering about how many folks work in the area (and you live in Chicago) count the "SBH" stickers on the rear windshields of cars. There is a plethora of them and they denote cars with hospital parking privileges.

I drive right in front of there a few days a week (taking vincennes between hyde park and beverly). It's not the worst part of Englewood but also not an area I'd take a stroll in, especially at night, but you shouldn't have any problems going to/from your car. The parking lot looks very secure and I see lots of other staff doing it. I wouldn't worry about it.

Default One of us is reading the OP's inquiry differently...

I don't think the OP is thinking about relying on public transit. The way I read this the OP is trying to decide between "risking" his own personal car or letting Avis / Hertz take the risk.

Pretty silly.

I mean "vandalism", as reported by CPD is mostly a euphemism for "kid sees stuff in car, smashs window and grabs stuff". If the OP is parking in a patrolled lot and does not leave their GPS / smartphone / high end luggage laying out in plain view it ain't going to be a target.
