I came across some really cool old photos of the Near West Side of Chicago taken in 1971 on the WBEZ website. Before the bulldozers: The near West Side, circa 1971 | WBEZ

What's interesting is that most of the photos were taken in an area that has since been bulldozed to make room for the Illinois Medical District. There's a lot of cool pictures of urban decay, neighborhood kids, and groovy 70s fashion.

Anyway, here is a link to all of the pictures: Valley Project 1971 - a set on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vouchey/sets/72157625828492479/ - broken link)

I love looking at and reading about Chicago history...

Anybody know what kind of neighborhood it was? Why they chose to tear it down for the Medical District as opposed to any other neighborhood?

Great pics - thanks for posting them!

That area was a ghetto, similar to many parts of the West side today. The area was especially hard hit by the riots in 1968 after the assassination of Dr. King. That played a part in the choice of tearing that area down.
