If you really remember what machine politics were like in Chicago, you would understand the difference about when a bigwig gets city services. As far as I know, she walks her dog everyday. Now, I don't think one person getting a raise means that she's continuing the practice of a former incumbent.

Now, how does she prove she is not lying? You'd have to post each day and say: "No lie yet, but just wait!"

So all the pundits should ease up on her doing the honeymoon period. Then one can flame away.

Remember? Machine politics are still going on!

I already pointed out her backtracking on her promise to have all of the tax increase repealed once she took office, not 2-3 years down the line. This raise is another blemish. She has been in office only a couple of months!

Even the Sun-Times agrees with me on the tax repeal issue!

"Congratulations, President Preckwinkle, on your resounding victory. You deserved to win. Now roll back that tax increase."

"In 2009, the County Board, overriding a Stroger veto, scaled back the sales tax increase by half, effective last July 1. In her "Compact for Change," Preckwinkle said she would repeal the other half. The general assumption, we believe, was that Preckwinkle would push to repeal the tax quickly after she was elected -- and we're holding her to that. It's only fair to voters that she put the tax cut on a very short timetable."

5/2010

"A candidate for Cook County Board president says she must delay a campaign promise to roll back the county's sales tax."

"Preckwinkle said Wednesday there is no way the rest of the sales tax increase could be rolled back next year."

"Alderman Preckwinkle said in response to one question that she did not think the sales tax could be rolled back until 2012"

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?sec...ics&id=7451118

Then in 12/2010:

"Newly installed Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle today pledged to eliminate the remaining half-cent-on-the-dollar sales tax increase by January 2013."

If you are familiar with 'machine' politics up to 1979, the structure and operation of any Chicago political organization now is vastly different. Do you have a precinct captain?

That is why it is so misleading for anyone to refer to the 'Chicago Democratic machine'.

I never claimed it is the same in current times as it once was.

Well to at least be midly fair - the department is going through reforms and changes. The job that's being filled has changed and includes more responsibilities as a Deputy Superintendent as opposed to the old job which was that of Executive Assistant.

Maybe it's all bull, or maybe it's not - but at least they had some sort of answer to why this was happening as opposed to Stroger who just did what he wanted and then sat there grinning.

I actually like Toni. She seems to be more than just talk with her spending cuts and cleaning the house of dozens of employees.

It probably is bull.

Stroger (and father) had all kinds of b.s. creative ways to explain away giving people huge raises too.
