I don't have a lot of basis for comparison yet, but so far I'm partial to Vino Thai in St. Charles.

I've never been, but I hear the best Thai restaurant in Chicago (and possibly the entire Midwest) is supposed to be Arun's on the Northwest Side (4100 block of N. Kedzie). It is very, very expensive, however... about $100 per person ("fixed price" menu, several-course dinner).

For more "everyday" Thai food, I'm rather partial to Thai Classic in Wrigleyville. I find it to be a cut above most of the other little Thai eateries in the area.

For the poster who said Thai curry in Chicago is "too watered down", if you meant lack of spice, try a little place in the 4100 block of N. Broadway called Thai Aroma (I believe they also have another location on Randolph in the West Loop, and a third location on North Avenue). You can order spiciness on a scale of 1 to 6, and if you order a 5 or 6 it's really fiery hot! (Their menu makes a point of saying "Break a Sweat--No Refunds".) Try their Green Curry Noodle, it's awesome.

If you want a great authentic thai food where most Thais would eat, I would prefer Rosded on 2308 W. Leland Ave., Chicago. They cook the food with very much the same taste buds as it is in Thailand. If you prefer something with a bit of modification to fit the general public,
I would definitely go for Siam Marina (although, they are located in Calumet City); there are so many excellent dishes that one is overwhelmed when deciding. Due to the success of Siam Marinas, the owner is opening up a new Vietnamese cuisine called Asparagus in Merryville, IN soon. I can't wait to see what wonderful dishes chef Tammy Pham is creating in this new restaurant.

no, i actually meant that the curry i've had is less thick. it's as if they water down the coconut milk. thanks for the recommendation.

Sounds like a pretty sweet contest. Since I've been in the burbs more the past few months (due to a temporary living situation), I'm going to recommend a place in the Near North suburbs, and a place in the Far North suburbs. Alright, if you're into picking up a kick-ass Pad Thai, I'd recommend Opart's which is in Wilmette (very close to the Skokie border) off of Skokie Boulevard. No, it's not a sit-down restaurant, but you can pick up your food, and take it home. About a mile south of there in Skokie I believe there is a more sit-down type of restaurant called Ruby Of Siam. If I'm not mistaken, they also have a location in Evanston. Oparts MAY also have a location somewhere in the north side of the city, and I think they may have one in the southwest side off of Archer very close to Chinatown as well, but don't quote me on it, ask the owners at the Wilmette Opart's, and they'll be able to tell you.

Far North burbs:

A new place opened up called "Sushi Thai" at the corner of Petersen Road (also known as Rte. 137 or Buckley Road) and Milwaukee Avenue (Rte. 21). The owner used to own a very famous Thai restaurant in Midtown Manhattan called Danny's. (that's right folks this guy packed up and left NYC for the outskirts of Libertyville about 40 miles outside of Chicago). I think their restaurant was connected to a theater / broadway / cabaret stage type of setup (Danny's Skylight Room):

Danny's Skylight Room - New York, NY, 10036-3881 - Citysearch

But in any case, Sushi Thai in Libertyville does not disappoint. They make Thai food, Japanese food, and Sushi. And the interior seems very clean, modern, and like a great place to bring friends or family. If you're in Lake County or simply on your way to or from Wisconsin or Six Flags, I'd certainly stop by and grab a bite.

I don't know about best, since that seems so ridiculously subjective, but I am quite fond of the Thai Grill (1040 W Granville) in Edgewater. It's good quality and quite inexpensive. Without a doubt it's my favorite restaurant of any type in the neighborhood (though it's not exactly overwhelmed with competition) and one of the things I'll miss most about the area now that I've relocated to another part of the city.

You're definitely on point with this review. When I used to have an apartment near the Rogers Park / Edgewater border (think Sheridan Rd very close to Loyola / Loyola Ave), I also used to frequent Thai Grill off of Granville, near the Granville / Kenmore intersection. The food was excellent, and the owners were always very courteous to their customers.

I like the Thai Grill, too. It's well out of my neighborhood, but I make the trek every couple weeks or so during the warmer months. I like the fact that you can order a "Special Combination" consisting of entree plus egg roll and two pot stickers for only $7.45... I usually get the Panang Curry Chicken.

Another very nice thing about the Thai Grill is that they have a very extensive vegetarian menu.
