Default Any plans to expand Lake Shore Drive

Some friends say that there are plans to expand Lake Shore Drive on the north side to Evanston & to the Eastside neighborhood on the south side.

Doe's anybody know if this is true?

The short answer is no.

Friends of the Parks is leading an initiative called The Last Four Miles to complete the continuous lakefront park all the way north to Evanston, and on the south between Jackson Park and Calumet Park. One of their principles is that extension of the park should not include an extension of Lake Shore Drive. Since there is no money available for the foreseeable future, however, it's possible that an eventual compromise might be reached that might make use of highway funding.

Separately, a new surface street carrying US 41 along the west edge of the Lakeside (South Works) site is now under construction. This will probably be called Harbor Drive rather than Lake Shore Drive, however.

There have been plans for the north extension for years. The people in Edgewater and Rogers Park have fought it with tooth and nail.

hahaha, i can't even image where the north extension would go. just turn sheridan into it? edgewater and neighborhoods north of that will always win. lots of money there. the extension will completely destroy that area since high rises would have to be east of the drive.

Um no.

The lake would be landfilled and the extension would go east of the high rises.

Fair enough, I suppose that's how downtown was constructed, but all of the work would annoy the heck out of the people in the area. Still don't think it would happen.
