The OP is not talking about after midnight.

How much should I worry about safety as a single female on the El coming back into Chicago around 9 pm on a Saturday night?

Imo, at 9 PM, there is not much to worry about. I don't like the Wilson stop, but I don't think that it would be that dangerous at 9 PM.

Oh, I guess I saw "late" but didn't see "9 o'clock." There's usually so many people around at nine that there's not usually anything to worry about safety-wise.

The morons around there shoot people in the middle of the day.

When people post anecdotal crime stories about riding the L with the implicit suggestion that the OP should drive instead while completely ignoring the fact that driving or riding in a car is about the riskiest thing we do every day, it makes me wonder if they have no capacity for risk assessment or are just being sensationalist.

Or maybe they just prefer honesty. It is possible to get hurt on the El through no fault of your own, without doing something stupid. It is extremely unlikely this will happen, it's true, but not impossible. The one and only time I mentioned driving as the preferred alternative, it was in jest. Of course the El is preferable.

Nobody said the Red Line is too dangerous to take at night. But stops like the Wilson and Howard stop should be avoided as much as possible.

I was asking more about the El in general, not just the Wilson station. It just happens to be the closest stop to me.

tonythetuna, I hear your opinion loud and clear -- you don't like the Wilson stop. Thank you.

The other posters have given me a good range of answers & insight to help me with my question, thank you all!

9PM at Wilson shouldn't be too bad. Just got to be aware, like many places.
