Default A shipyard in Chicago

Chicago has shipyards for yachts, but none for international shipping or warships. A shipyard the size of the one in Odense would certainly bite a huge chunk out of the unemployment rate in Chicago. Chicago needs a shipyard!

There is a lot less great lakes shipping than there once was and it would be a hassle to bring your ship all the way to Chicago when you can just fix it on the coasts.

Great lakes shipping was more city to city than nation to nation(other than Canada). We do have a port for large ships to drop off cargo and what not. It might have made sense before rail and air travel but Chicago still is a major rail hub and we are home to one of the busiest airports in the country(O'Hare).

Not if no one is buying ships - and right now there is a glut of cargo ships and the US has plenty of shipyards for military vessels. In fact, the Navy is wasting a lot of money on unneeded facilities.

Calumet Harbor does have drydocks and shipyard facilities, and they are currently underutilized.

I was thinking more along the lines of a space station, similar to the one in Florida where the space shuttles were launched. If our new mayor is on the ball, he can get the construction started so it will be finished in time to launch whatever NASA decides to build to replace the space shuttles. Perhaps the old Michael Reese hospital site would be perfect for this.

A Space Facility would fall to the State and Federal Government, not the city.

lol.... Unfortunately US law requires that you launch rockets over the ocean due to the staging....can't have stages dropping on Michigan.

I think we should have students at Kingston University study this.

But we need to do something with the Michael Reese site! How about we lure the headquarters of Microsoft, Google and Facebook there? It could be our very own silicon valley.
