Default andersonville

we were in chicago this weekend looking at neighborhoods to buy/rent. our favorite neighborhood was andersonville between just south of argyle and quite a ways north of bryn mawr. we also really liked the residential areas of roscoe village. these neighborhoods are the type of neighborhoods we really like and can also really afford. any suggestions on other neighborhoods to really concentrate on or any negatives associated with these 2 neighborhoods? thanks for the help

The only negative I can think of for Andresonville is that the commute time to downtown can be pretty lengthy. Another neighborhood that sounds like it would be up your alley would be Lincoln Square, just under a mile north of Roscoe Village. It centers around Lincoln Avenue from about Irving Park Rd (maybe a little north) to Lawrence Avenue.

You are moving from the UK to work in Harvey? You are kidding aren't you? Harvey is like one of the worst places in America.

It's a touch gritty with the occasional unsavory character hanging out near the L stops, but otherwise it's fine. Depending on which side of Devon you're on, you may either be in Edgewater or Rogers Park -- Edgewater south of Devon, Rogers Park north of Devon. Keep in mind that the quality of the neighborhood starts to become inconsistent at best as you head north of Devon, but you should be OK up to about Pratt.

This exact area might possibly be my favorite area I've ever lived, city-wise (I was on Clark, slightly north of Bryn Mawr, basically one of the the furthest north reach of Edgewater-Andersonville). I had no commute-time problems, because I worked only a short bike ride away in Rogers Park, not downtown...while I didn't think the train ride to the loop was horrible when going down that way for entertainment was horrendous, I probably wouldn't wanna do it to work and back every day.

The area around Loyola is fairly hit and miss, IMO, and it also depends on your tolerance for walkups full of students. A married couple friend of mine in their late twenties rented a place on Glenwood that was probably about 90% students, unknowingly (new in town, trying to find a place quickly), and drunken fratty types beating on their fire-escape side door at all hours and bellowing while going up and down the outer stairs got really old (they ended up moving to Lincoln Square). I wouldn't call it the sketchiest of areas, though. And it's predominantly in Rogers Park, as Drover pointed out.
