I agree. 300 a month would probably only be enough to make you 1 of 3 or 4 room-mates somewhere in a cheap neighborhood. That's rough.

If you could go up to $500 you might be able to find something decent in Rogers Park or similar.

Otherwise, you're going to need roomies.

Once I had one for $350 on Montrose and Clark, it was very ugly and noisy though.

Chicago is a major city and northside is the better part of it. Even $600-700 is not gonna cut it I suppose.

$700 might. We got a huge 2-bedroom off Humboldt Blvd for $800 in 2006. Cue the people saying "Humboldt! OMG!!"

There are studios in my current building for $585.

That said, there are worse apartments in worse neighborhoods for cheaper.

Studios in Ravenswood could be had in crappy elevator buildings for about $675 though.
