This is a very broad generalization but if you stay within these areas you'll be fine. Generally the whole north side is pretty safe. You'll end up in Lakeview for the Cubs game, and on your way there you will probably take the Red Line north through Goldcoast, Old Town and Lincoln Park. All of these are safe and popular neighborhoods with lots of people and things to do/eat.

Really? East of 94 and north of Roosevelt? So you don't want him to go to Chinatown, or a White Sox game or to see the beautiful University of Chicago campus, or the sleek modernist IIT campus, or Pilsen, or Bridgeport? You don't think Wicker Park and Bucktown, two of the most vibrant areas in the country, are worth seeing? You'd disuade him from seeing the wonderful Garfield Park Conservatory? Or Greektown, and the United Center (home of Bulls and Hawks games), for that matter, since they're west of 94?

The South and West Sides have their troubled parts, but to draw a line at Roosevelt Road and I94 arbitrarily is something only naive and gullible people do.

To the traveler: Ignore Jandur's advice. If you read about some place in Chicago you'd like to see, go see it. The places that are most dangerous rightfully receive little to no coverage as tourist or entertainment or cultural spots, so you're unlikely to end up with any of them on your list of places to go. Since you're already street savvy, use your wits and common sense about how to handle night time (don't cut through alleys at night in any neighborhood), and you'll have a safe, memorable visit.

Please note that I said that my suggestions were very "broad generalizations". But good job displaying your lack of reading comprehension.

My suggestion were simply to give an outsider very general guidelines as to how to avoid bad neighborhoods.

And yes, seeing as how Garfield Park is one of the most dangerous areas in the city, and he was asking for "safe and fun areas", I would advise against him going there.

But thank you for taking the time out of your day to discredit my help and send him on a goose chase that could land him in neighborhoods he wants to avoid.
