Okay I just accepted a position with a company in the lincoln park/bucktown area (on N Elston) so I will be relocating to Chicago. I am trying to get all my ducks in a row for the move and I was informed there is free street parking in front of my work. Is it really free? Doesn't street parking (not metered) require a parking sticker?

Also any recommendations on apartment finding services?

Thanks! I am so excited but very nervous about the move to Chicago!

I've been chatting long distance with two guys who have been EXTREMELY helpful and have given me tons of info and offered me time when I arrive. They are:

jake@freedowntown.com
and
luis at windycityoffice@gmail.com

Good luck, and if you do work with either of those guys, please post back and let me know how it went since I'll be following in your footsteps, I hope.

Yes it is free. The City Sticker is not a parking sticker. It is a tax on people who have cars. It does not entitle you to parking. You would still need a city sticker even if you put the car in a garage.

The area where you work might not have residential parking restrictions in place. That is the only time you would need a sticker or pass to park in the area. The bigger issue is if there is enough parking in the area, a workplace could really fill up a street esp. one without a parking lot.

Check out the parking questions thread that was recently posted it will give you lots more info.

Most apartment reviews will be bad. I wouldn't worry about reviews. How many times have you written a good review for an apartment?

Default Very true about the apartment, but the parking ...

I don't know what any rental company could do to really encourage folks to write glowing postives -- are they gonna let folks pay a week late with no penalty and publicize that? It would only encourage deadbeats.

Basically if the reviews highlight things that are hard / impossible to change you gotta avoid those units -- bad location, unsafe conditions, overly connected nut jobs. Anything that is posted beyond that you take with a LARGE grain of salt...

The thing that I am curious about is not the apartments, but an employer that says there is plenty of free on street parking near Damen & Elston -- that is a NOTORIOUS GRID LOCKED INTERSECTION!!! So much so there is a proposal to COMPLETELY overhaul the mess: City of Chicago :: Damen-Elston-Fullerton intersection improvement

Parking might not require a residential permit, but it is hardly "plentiful" -- maybe a space or two for a multi-story building. Pretty much means you are gonna need to have a "plan b"... damen elston chicago il - Google Maps
