If you live in Chicago then you are a Chicagoan. There are no rules for being a true or whatever Chicagoan, Los Angeleno or Knickerbocker. Silly people have nothing to do so they make all those rules what constitutes this and that. If you love Chicago then it's all you need. Who cares where were you born or raised. There can only be the difference between nationalities. Nationalities do matter but not cities

How long you've been here isn't really the right metric IMO.

What matters is whether in the course of your life you will be acquainted with people who are different from you.

Natives by and large are simply more likely to have kids here, to appreciate what it's like to be a kid here, the challenges our aging parents have here, etc.

This comes into play when a bunch of recent transplants want to say, turn a park into a dog run. Or close a school as they don't think it's an appropriate use of space/condense two schools into one without thinking about the long-term. Or not fund the CTA, as they primarily drive.

These issues have more to do with being cognizant of every age group than anything else, but obviously income levels come into play as well.

My advice is for everyone to just remember that old maxim "play nicely with others," and remember not everyone is like you, whatever that means.
