Yes I know I'm being a bit sarcastic and I'm not saying this is exactly what Prelude meant. But the big picture is be happy men and women will wear the uniform, will go into danger and deal with large groups and wrong doing in an attempt to keep you safe.

Why is it you cops always have to pat yourselves on the backs for doing this?? When I was in the service, I never saw anyone constantly patting themselves on the back like you guys do. I never heard a 19 year old PFC. say "Gee you guys should be so thankful we wear the uniform everyday for you, blah blah blah". And I'd be willing to bet, in fact I KNOW we (my unit) faced more hostile fire in several months than most cops do the entire time they wear the badge. Just give it a rest with that stuff already, because it sounds like a tired broken record (rhetoric).

I concur! Whites are relatively safe in black communities. A white person dead in Englewood would surely cause an uproar and national attention. There may be a few gawkers at first, but if he/she is a regular it will subside.

LakeShore, it's not a pat on the back or any of the other crap on how you want to spin it. But I will say thank you for your service. If you don't care to say it in return to Firemen, Cop's, etc. then that's your choice, doesn't really matter to me.

I spoke to a couple who were sitting on their porch while this happened, and it sounded like they had not done anything wrong, but somebody called the police becasue they looked suspicious.

It jsut seems like people are loosing their mind over this mini crime wave.

Your comparison is pretty bad. Most people wouldn't fear a group of drunk recent college grads coming out of a bar after watching a football game. The worst that's gonna happen is they might pee on your lawn.
On the other hand, when a group of thug looking black kids are hanging out in a 'white' neighborhood, people are going to get concerned. Not because they're racist but because the facts are, blacks/hispanics tend to commit move violent crimes in Chicago than whites do. There's a reason shootings rarely occur on the northside while it's not unusual to have several shootings every night in the summer on the south and west sides.
Call it what you want, profiling or whatever, but I can assure you that most people living in that area are happy with how the cops handled this.

So is it the group of black kids or the "black thug" aspect that bothers them?

The only difference between the soldier and the cop is the name of the employeer. One protects their country while the other protects their community. They both wear uniforms and carry weapons. They are both highly trained killing machines. Neither relates to people on an emotional level.

I bought my dog from a guy who volunteered for his 8th tour in Iraq. We talked about the war and country. I asked how he felt about killing others. He laughed; he said he does his job and sleeps fine.

Most cops will tell you the same thing. I had breakfast with a cop I went to school with. The coroner popped in with 4-color pictures of a murder from the night before, You never see that much blood and splatter on television; it was gruesome. After the coroner left I asked him how he could eat after seeing the pictures. "It's easy. I'm hungry."

Neither is more patriotic than the other, nor is lees deserving than the other. The cops don't have the unit at the ready, a company or a batallion in a fire fight on the streets.
