The northside is far from mostly good.....there are some gang-infested areas all over the north and northwest sides, mostly hispanic orientated.....Rogers Park and Uptown are places you wouldn't want to stroll solo at night.....Albany Park has gunshots ringing all over from gangbangers.....now that the city is gentrified, and you have so much going on south, from Hyde Park to Beverly to Bridgeport to Mt. Greenwood, and the loop is trending south, it is close to the point where north and south is roughly equal in crime.

Not every northside neighborhood is puppy dogs and ice cream. But to claim it's roughly equal? Sorry. Not even close.

You've got to be kidding. Probably twice as much of the city's land is experiencing 'white flight' ('flight' that consists of all races/ethnicities - basically most of the southeast, southwest, and northwest of the city) when compared to the amount that is gentrifying (the near northwest, the south loop, and north side neighborhoods along the lake sans Rogers Park).

The north side was as working-class as the south side outside of the DT and environs districts. Lincoln Park was seedy, and Lakeview was a bit dangerous in the 70's. Uptown was skid row, Cabrini was near north. henry horner homes were NW, and humboldt park was a war zone. The "wrigleyville and environs" gentrification didn't happen till the very late 70's - early 80's.....Started with Sandburg Village and a bohemian Old Town, with Ripley's believe it or not, lots of head and candle shops, and such, and built up from there. meanwhile, the ethnic areas mostly cleared out of the south side....so the city is always morphing, and it would not be unusual for the entire south side to gentrify, per pullman homes, old brownstones in South Shore, Morgan Park mansions, and much more. The more things change, the more they remain the same...

That's ridiculous. Most of Uptown and Rogers Park are just fine now, and there are really only a few pockets that I would worry about walking through at night (check out my tagline above to see where I live). Most of the North Side is doing quite well, and there aren't that many dangerous areas left. Some of those Hispanic neighborhoods on the Northwest Side are among the safest in the city. The worst Hispanic North Side neighborhoods in terms of crime are probably Logan Square (which is a bit west), Avondale, and Albany Park. But none of these areas are what I would call a "ghetto", and all of them are experiencing massive gentrification. Uptown and Rogers Park probably have the most dangerous real estate left on the North Side, but they are a walk in the park compared to what you would find on the south or west sides--and the problem areas are getting smaller and smaller every day. The part of Uptown I live in is very safe.

Rogers Park was number #1 in rapes for years. I remember. I saw it in the Chicago papers, and in person. Uptown is very partially gentrified. They haven't completely removed the cut-rate liquor stores, sleaze bars, transient apartments, and derelicts just yet. Many structures, old theaters, department stores, etc. stand old and abandoned. My brother lived in Albany Park, heard gunshots from gangbangers many nights, got held up by bangers in the hood with cold steel to his head, asking him to show 'colors', and had CPD dealing drugs in the back alley........much of Humboldt Park is still Latin King turf....don't know many yuppie couples cool enough with the scene to walk at night with gangbangers milling about. I don't think this poster has heard of Lawndale on the NW side, or all the projects sprinkled about the NW side, like the Henry Horner homes....Chicago as a WHOLE is dangerous...more murders than NYC with half the population......don't forget all the gangster related hits over the years as well ...john dillinger - Biograph........St. Valentine's day massacre.....O'Banion getting bumped off in front of Holy Name Cathedral.....Chicago's ganster past is more north side than south side..........I guess if you consider white people in their 20's-30's safe areas, than the thin slice of Chicago from DT to Evanston, about 2 miles in at it's widest, might be what many consider safe, but you have a sea of thousands of gangbangers in all directions, including NW and N, surrounding that white 20-30 something sliver.......Its always safe till you or someone you know gets robbed or raped......

You are right about most things. However, there is no way crime is equal even if you are including the West Side with the North Side, which you should not do.

Very true. Look at Portage Park for example to Portage Park even ten years ago. Mont Clare is going down really quick.

You are right on the money with this one. In terms of the South Side coming back, that remains to be seen. If anything, the West Side east of California will come back first.

Yes Rogers and Uptown are far better than they once were, but I still would not live in most of Rogers Park and over half of Uptown. You may live in a great area, but it is not the norm in my opinion.
