I know the most common food question people have coming to Chicago usually involves pizza. But what about barbeque? In particular, where do you go to get a really good slab of ribs?

Most in the know agree that Chicago is, shockingly, a BBQ desert, so you can expect to see a LOT more authentic BBQ places pop up in the next few years, with, I would guess, very traditional and authentic recipes imported direct from the best places in St. Louis, Kansas City, etc.

The new Q is very, very good, I think. I've also heard the new Lilly Q is good.

I'm far from an afficianado...but I'll always love Twin Anchors chicken n ribs and actually I would like to try Carson's one of these days though I've heard mixed reviews.

For ribs - Honey One and Honky Tonk would be your best bet. Both places are excellent and true BBQ. Chicago BBQ is known for it's rib tips and hot links combos. Honey One, Uncle John's, and Barbara Ann's are all great for that.

Smoque is excellent, and has great ribs, but is best in brisket. Lilly Q and Fat Willy's are very good as well. All are true BBQ, Chicago is loaded with places that are boil and broil (sometimes good, but not BBQ). Twin Anchors has excellent ribs, but if you're looking for low and slow over smoke they may not be what you're looking for. Sun Wah BBQ has some awesome Chinese smoked pigs and ducks as well.

I can't believe I didn't mention my favorite restaurant in all of Chicago currently:

Boo Il Galbi Korean BBQ, off Kimball and Bryn Mawr.

I cannot recommend the unmarinated short ribs (yes, over the marinated) enough. Seriously. They make you buy a minimum 2 orders though for it so don't go alone unless you like to eat a LOT

How is that a shock? Pollacks aren't known for their mad BBQ skills! You're also a few hundred miles north of anyplace that makes passable BBQ.

Because we have one of the best and most diverse dining scenes in the world and it's a comfort food and easily salable to everyone...I think over the next few years you will see an explosion of authentic BBQ in Chicago.

people who haven't tried korean bbq don't know what they're missing, and I grew up in what would be considered "authentic bbq" country in the South
