Official best Mexican restaurant thread
Since the food topics have dwindled lately, I figured Id spark up another one to get things going again. Post your favorite Mexican joint in Chicago and the burbs. If its too epic of a question to answer, post your favorite burrito, taco, enchilada, etc from each restaurant you feel takes the cake.
My vote goes to either Miguels (St. Charles) or El Taco Grande (Batavia).

Since I didn't start this one, I'll post my favorite early--New Rebozo in Oak Park. Chef Paco has specials every night which are just wonderful--stuff like pomegranate chicken dishes, different moles every night. Plus he's an all around good guy--you feel like you're dining in his home rather than at a restaurant. The standard Mexican fare there is a-ok as well.

When we come to Chicago we always try and stop at Nuevo Leon on 18th street.

Is Pepe's still around? That was my favorite restaurant many years ago. I haven't found anything comparable down here in FL....

Mexican Rest. Recc.
Hi -
I tend to go for the "dives" when it comes to
any traditional cooking styles ;-)
So I gotta send up - Cocula on 89th and Commercial.
The Laredo combo w/ limes + the red
sauce [comes w/ verde] is my fave.
It's a chicken tostada, beef taco and
chile relleno. The other location, on Torrence, has
mariachis on the weekend...
El
The Fresa Liquado = fresh strawberries,
a bit of sugar & some milk, blended!

Pepe's is still around and stronger than ever. They are an old-school Chicago classic, and they're just plain good, so they automatically make my list. I especially like the Batavia location -- best margaritas on Earth. Other great Mexican joints in ascending order of upscale-ness include: - Le Pasadita, La Pasadita and La Pasadita in Wicker Park/West Town. Tasty steak tacos, big filling burritos, plus the novelty of three locations, two literally right next to each other and the third across the street from the other two.
- Arturo's in Bucktown. Excellent "sit at the counter and eat with your hands" burritos, and perfect for when you have a burrito craving at 5am.
- Artemeo's in Portage Park. Hole in the wall one step above Arturo's, but four enchiladas de mole for 5 bucks -- how can you beat that? Plus, best lengua tacos in town. Great food at a great price, though you might want to brush up on your culinary Spanish because some of their wait staff have very limited English comprehension.
- Carbon in Chinatown. Some of the best steak tacos in town, and Lord knows there's no shortage of competition. Nice encrusted talapia tacos too. Burritos are just "OK" though. Interesting juxtaposition of festive decor (both interior and exterior) in what is essentially a shack underneath the Dan Ryan Expressway.
- C. Manny's in Irving Park. On par with Pepe's in quality and price, good family dining atmosphere.
- El Puente in St. Charles. Also on par with Pepe's, maybe a step above, and with more of a "home-made" touch. I love to sit in the little table in the front window nook.
- Tia Maria's in Geneva. Pretty much for the same reasons as El Puente above.
- Chevy's in Schaumburg. This just might be the best mid-market chain restaurant in the country. Very unique approach to Tex-Mex cuisine; everything has a little bit of a smoky zing to it.
- Puerto Vallarta in River North. It's amazing how few Mexican restaurants there are in River North even though they're practically everywhere else in the city. A little bit more gourmet & upscale than your average Mexican restaurant. Great selection of tequilas, nice margaritas, interesting entrees and nice atmosphere.
- Frontera Grill/Topolobampo in River North. The reputation speaks for itself. Rick Bayless is world-famous for a reason.
