Millennialdad's job has moved to Schaumburg from the Detroit metro area. We are keeping our home in Michigan for now and need to have a 1 bedroom apartment in the Chicago area. We prefer to be downtown. We found a fabulous place in Fulton River District with great views of the river, the Loop and River North. He moved in at beginning of April. All is well but we are in a building of young professionals in their 20's, for the most part (97%+). It's a perfect place for our 27 yo son so we plan to turn the apt over to him in a month, or so and find a place with a little older crowd, or more of a mix of ages. Since we're keeping the place in Michigan we've set a budget of $2,000 - $2,200, including parking. Since I don't have a car when I'm in town, it needs to be in a place where I can get around safely, walking or taking trains.

Thanks,
m-mom

Almost ALL the apartment buildings in 'downtown,' say between Ontario and Division and Mi Ave and Wells would fit that exception, because they are too expensive for younger people.

There are a few exceptions, such as this enormous place...I forget, I think it is on Ontario...where it is almost all post college kids.

But nearly all buildings will be older people.

Look for people renting condos in condo buildings for an even more well established demo.

There's one beautiful building I remember..I'll post it later. 55 something. Maybe 55 east huron? ohio? gorgeous buildng, very affluent. Condos. I think there were a few people renting for about that. I'll post it later.

I believe I know the building you are talking about on Ontario. We stayed at The Dana Hotel when we were here looking for an apt in March and it sounds like the one across the street. I think we'll go take a stroll tonight in the area you described.

You might like Hawthorne House in the 3400 N Lake Shore Drive block. http://hawthornehouseapts.com/intro.asp. Your budget will be perfect. A nice high rise with great views of Belmont Harbor and the Lake/Park. This stretch of Lake Shore is beautiful and has lots of middle aged folks (and plenty of younger ones too). You can walk over to Broadway and be at the Treasure Island Grocery or Jewel in 5 to 10 minutes (and Broadway has tons of restaurants and shops).

Honestly, there are a lot of apt buildings that would meet your description. You won't have a problem finding just the right thing. good luck.

There should be plenty, if not the majority, of what you're looking for in these areas:

Streeterville (east of Michigan Ave & north of the river up to Oak Street Beach)

New East Side (east of Columbus between Wacker & Randolph)

Gold Coast (look at the highrises along Lake Shore Drive and a few blocks west)

I was getting a sense that the areas you have mentioned above would be a better fit. soulful's recommendation of Hawthorne House seems to be the kind of place we're looking for. From that location, is it difficult to get to the Kennedy? He needs to get to 90/94 for his commute to Schaumburg.

From Hawthorne House to I-90...you would take Addison or Irving Park from Lake Shore Drive all the way west to I-90. Both have on-ramps. Usually takes about 20 minutes from Lake Shore to I-90 ramp.

Now, if you were to live in Streeterville (just off N. Michigan), as the above poster suggested, you could just use Ohio/Ontario to get to/from the Kennedy/90.

I would think most buildings downtown have a good mix of 40-50 yos.

I don't know for sure, but I have a hunch you might find older residents in the older buildings.
