Most of these "gangs" are actually groups of gay black youth (not true gangmembers mind you) who are coming to the Lakeview/Halsted St area to hang out. Initially drawn by the Center on Halsted. 600 folks attended a neighborhood CAPS meeting to express concern which resulted in a very heated meeting. Many feel there need to be nightlife venues for underage gays in the area. When the Center is closed, they hang out on the street, etc. This is mainly around Belmont El/Clark/Halsted bar zone.

Just wanted to clarify we are not talking about real gang activity in Lakeview which is extremely rare.

Maybe blacks need to get with the times and have gay areas in their own neighborhoods.

Sounds like gangs to me, maybe not by some definitions but then today people might not think the Taylor St. Dukes, Chicago and Lawndale, Ohio and Leavitt, Riis Park, Orr and the MCs were real gangs.

No, I have to reiterate: These ARE real gang members. Sure, there are some "gay gangs" and some of the troublemakers may be gay, but the real problem makers are NOT "homeless gay youths", as the COH and Gender Just keep trying to claim. They are straight males in their early 20's. The COH is trying to gin up trouble (thru their front group, Gender JUST) and capitalize on the issue by stating that the troublemakers are bored and will keep stabbing you unless you donate money for a juice bar/nightclub or some other nonsense. Notice, that when the weather gets cold or when the sun comes out, these "youths" dissappear. I have specifically watched these people drive up and park on Halsted, big car fulls of them. They all get out and start loitering.

Sounds like the cops should be called everytime you see one of these cars pull up.

Traditionally this problem has been handled in Chicago by flooding problem areas with police for a period of time. With all the publicity around this, I'm surprised that hasn't happened yet.

Not entirely fair. It's not like white people suddenly, charitably decide to make space for gay neighborhoods either. Typically a gay area develops in a diverse environment, often immigrant, and the infusion of street life spurs gentrification which makes an area whiter. Basically, if Lakeview is anything like your typical gay enclave, it's safe to say to that it was gay before it was white.

Also, those of us who have spent significant time among gay crowds can attest to the diversity. I'm sure there has always been a good number of black men in Boystown; it's uninformed to suggest that they just starting showing up this year.

Nope, a good portion of East Lake View was white and middle class with a bit of "diversity" until a large number of gays came in.

Why don't you answer the $10 million dollar question? Why are there no gay areas in majority black neighborhoods?
