Once a few years back I was waiting for my son to show up at the greyhound station. The bus was late it being Friday. I would call him for a status update every now and then. I noticed a man (middle aged/black/nervous) kept eyeing me. I kept wondering what he might be up too.

Eventually he got my ear and we talked. It didn't take me long to figure out that he was delayed in getting to were he needed to be. He just wanted to let his wife know he was OK and about when he might show up.

I dialed the number, got voicemail, and gave him my phone. He left a quick message and that was that. He was grateful and we chatted a bit till my son showed up.

That's the last time I remember anyone asking.

This thread reminds me of why I despise hustlers and thieves. They really get in the way of good people helping each other out.

Actually, I've almost always been asked when I wasn't on my phone. The foreign language thing works pretty well, until you run into someone that understands you either way .

No you don't even need to know a foreign language. When I get approached my someone I don't feel like dealing with I just make aggressive eye contact and say something that just sounds Russian in an assertive tone. I don't know why but people seem to be scared of Russians.

Well, yes, basically. Remember those huge banks of phones in the O'Hare baggage claim and outside that aren't there anymore? They're not the only casualties.

Not that that's generally why they're asking. Oh, and I don't think I've ever been asked when I had my phone on me, oddly enough.

I don't do it because everytime someone I know has lent their phone out they end up getting random calls from people asking for so and so. They more or less use your phone so it's not traced back to them for some reason or another.

I'll say NO or I will just say I have no minutes. I'm leery of people who ask to use my phone on the train. I don't trust em and my phone cost me a lot of money so if it gets broken I'll have to pay for it. So I just say NO
