The whole Chad and Trixie personas are associated with young white people. Any good looking white dude or cute/hot white woman can probably be mistaken as one of these Chads or Trixies until they open up their mouth or proven otherwise. The same people, except black this time? not so much.... though I heard of a few bm named Chad. But anywho, there are black people numbering in the thousands living in LP. It doesn't have Bridgeport reputation thats for sure.

Interesting how we stereotype good-looking white dudes and hot white chicks who have to ''prove themselves'' in some way to not be what we assume they are...what about a black man dressed in the ''urban'' motif who may be the most honest, hardworking decent man in the city yet he too has to "prove himself" not be what we think he is...

nor does it have the Englewood reputation or the reputation of many black areas in the city as well. I recall having a bite to eat at a Metra stop down around maybe 95th street or so while I waited for a train...the sister working there was giving "the look" and I totally got her vibe...no problem...I paid the bill...no tip...would never go back there...her financial loss...she made it a black-white issue and because of this she lost some green.

I guess I thought it would be the same in Lincoln Park or other genitified parts, but I guess not. I have just learned not hang out there and not look for acceptance or approval because I feel that is what I was doing and I was in my 20s thinking this is where I am suppose to be. My piece of advice go where you are comfortable and dont spend too much energy trying to fit in places you should just because you think you are suppose to.
I wouldn't say I'm "uncomfortable" in LP, but it's definitely not my social scene. I went to bars in LP a few times a couple years ago with classmates and I was definitely a fish out of water. Much the same on the Clark Street/LV bar scene. I just don't go to these places much any more, and if I do it's to buy something from a specific store or to see a specific band, not to pubcrawl/socialize. There are still a couple LV places I'll hit now and again, namely Duke of Perth and occasionally Gingerman, but it's not quite your typical Clark Street crowd at these places (despite them both being on Clark Street). And of course there's Delilah's in LP that's still holding out against the Chad/Trixie explosion that happened around it a couple decades ago.

Don't forget Rose's Lounge, another rare bar survivor of LP gentrification. And one of the very rare bars that feels refreshingly different from the typical LP/LV college/frat crowd many of the bars surrounding it(though not all) attract.

Though with the (sort of) recent demise of Johnny's Tavern at Lincoln/Newport, who knows how much longer Rose's will stay open....

I used to live on a certain block near the West Lakeview/Roscoe Village border. Turns out our landlord was not only a complete d-bag slumlord, but was a racist to boot & and has been telling anyone who'll listen to him that he will "never rent to blacks again". Our former neighbors were telling us this and it seems like the vast majority of the people on the block agree that he's a bigoted jerk. I haven't let that experience impact my view of Lakeview as a whole since he is just one guy and all of our neighbors had been great. However, nearly every black person we've told ourstory to have basically said "that's why blacks don't live in Lakeview" and why we should have lived in a majority black area.

It's a curious and frankly sad response. You have a gross minority of people like my former LL reinforcing this idea of Lakeview being unwelcoming towards blacks. During the entire time we lived there, we (myself & my other black roommate) never felt unwelcome, despite there being only like 4 other black residents in our area. We tell people that our LL was a jerk towards our white roommates as well and is just an overall jerk to all, but people just latched onto the white-black racism. That was never our intention when we told these people our story, but that's the idea they took home w/ them: there's a racist guy in LV= LV is filled w/ racists.

Are there racial issues that need to be addressed in Chicago? Yes.but I do think it is blown out of porportions at time and you have people taking single incidents and stretching them to fit the whole area. I'm not going to stop going to bars in LP just b/c of this one article (not that I went to bars in LP a lot anyways. Too many drunken frat boys and sorority sluts) and I'm not going to avoid LV or tell other blacks not to live in LV b/c of one LL.

And you were perfect tenants, not late with rent, no nonsense? If not, you have a jerk landlord. Who cares what he's says afterwords...let it go. What would prompt him to say, if he said it, that he would never rent to blacks again considering he rented to you and your black roommate?
Telling other blacks just feeds into ''there's racism everywhere'' syndrome. They are equally guilty of perpetuating a problem in that they will hold all white people especially now, those in Lakeview, as racists just like your landlord holds whatever bad experience he may have had with you against all blacks.
