I honestly don't know the answer to this, but are they stolen more because they are more popular? In other words, do the numbers look to be larger because there are larger numbers? Or are they truly stolen more in proportion to numbers that exist? Just curious

Id be led to believe that theyre stolen more because of their popularity. As I mentioned, many thieves steal the cars and sell the parts and make a killing.

Most-stolen cars? It's debatable

One thing none of the methodologies mentioned in that article seem to take into consideration is the rate at which the cars are stolen compared to their overall numbers. Given that it seems to report raw numbers only, it should hardly be surprising that the Accord and Camry are the most frequently stolen cars in America. Guess which are the two best-selling passenger cars in America? Surprise -- the Accord and Camry. So maybe more of them are stolen because there are simply more of them to steal. That's like saying "Robbers who knock over convenience stores take singles, fives and tens more often than 20s, 50s and 100s." Well yeah -- because the cash register has more of the former and less of the latter, not because the thief has any specific preference for singles and 5s over $50 bills.

No he's right, Accords and Camrys are hot commodoties on the street for car theives. But I drive a Benz and I don't know how long my baby's gonna last on the mean streets of Chicago...........

Not worried about car theives so much as crazy ass drivers, plus winter time is coming up again. How long will my baby's paint job last? Who knows? Cars last longer down south than they do in a wintry climate like Chicago's, you know.

Chicago winters absolutely suck! The first week is nice with the pretty snow, but then you start to sink into depression for the next 2-3 months and wonder why you live here. Just make sure to take a nice 2 week sunny vacation somewhere during this time.

Northern communities tend to have this issue... not just in the USA either. People get more depressive, probably at least in part because of vitamin D deficiency and lack of exercise due to the weather and lack of strong sunlight. IMO it might be a public health issue. Just compare depression and suicide rates of different regions and countries -- the correlation to colder climates is very large. It sucks because even if you feel alright, some people that you interact with might be feeling depressive, and thus less friendly, colder, more rude, etc etc. Including your friends. Plus people get out less in winter, and social interaction lessens - to a point where it affects the culture as a whole... notice how more northern places tend to have more reserved, less friendly (though 'nice') people.

I'm thinking of moving to Chicagoland as well - but having grown up and learned to drive in Silicon Valley, I'm not sure there's a traffic jam in the nation that could really scare me, either...

If I learned to drive in NYC.... I'm pretty sure that Chicago would be a walk in the park...

Well, you can move somewhere with mild winters, deal with the soulless sunbelt cities, and then also deal with their oppressive summer heat. Pretty soon youll sink into depression there and wonder why you live there too.

Amen, Steve-O. I can personally attest to the fact that extreme summer heat like what's experienced in the Deep South is pretty depressing too. You won't be doing any exercise in that kind of weather either. Did you know that over a dozen people died in Alabama this past month of heat stroke? I'm sure other states had heat related deaths as well, I just know AL because that's where I'm originally from. I will take a bitter Chicago winter over an oppressive Alabama summer any day. Clouds don't make me depressed, sunlight in my eyes and feeling like I'm being barbecued alive is what really gets me down. I tell people all the time, the weather up here is just fine. Even if it's - 10 F with a windchill of -30 F, the weather up here is just fine. Just as long as you pay your utility bill (hate to go thru a winter up here with no heat) and have enough sense to not go to work on a day like that, then you'll be OK. But people back home don't expect you to take off work just because it's 105 F with high humidity, you'll get laughed out of the office for doing that.
