Also, the map I'm looking at doesn't even list Andersonville..must be a subsection of a larger area...
Parts of Uptown are troubled, much of it is fine to very nice now. And yes, it is surrounded by great areas. Andersonville is in Edgewater just to the north of Uptown, and technically, some of the Andersonville shopping/entertainment area is in Uptown (Hopleaf).

Heck, most of Uptown (the community area) around Uptown (the core neighborhood) is fine. Part of Andersonville strictly speaking overlaps Uptown, and Andersonville is one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the city. For the most part though Andersonville is a subsection of Edgewater.

Albany Park is a mixed bag. The area generally thought of as "Albany Park" is a strange admixture of Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Balkan (Serb, Croat, etc.), and lingering Korean presence. You can walk down one block and see apartment complexes full of immigrants, and a couple blocks later you run into big brick houses on double-wide lots and Rod Blagovevich's house. The part with the big brick houses and home to former Governor Hairhelmet is known as Ravenswood Manor.

Thanks for the responses; you always have the impression that the further north you go in Chicagoland, the nicer it becomes, and I suppose, in general, that this is true ( esp when arriving in Evanston, Glencoe, Winnetka, etc), but there might be a pocket or two that will briefly challenge this assertion..

Agreed. I've been patronizing Uptown Bikes, which is at the epicenter of all things crazy in Uptown, and I haven't been creeped out as much. Strangely, it even seems improved over the last couple of years. Or, maybe I'm just not noticing it.

Yeah it was a rough week in Uptown. One killed and another wounded in a drive-by in front of Truman College in broad daylight, another shot and wounded on Sheridan Road the same day, and a death-by-bludgeoning in Clarendon Park. The shaky parts of Uptown have been "disappearing fast" for the last 20 years now.

The parts outside of Shiller's district actually have made substantial progress over the last few years, and with Shiller gone maybe the rest of Uptown will finally follow.
