I have a culinary degree and shortly a baking and pastry degree. I have family in Chicago and a job lined up when I graduate due to my chef have ties to the area in May. I have a family member that owns a home on N. Dayton that will rent me out their 2 bedroom basement apartment for a steal.

My questions are how is the neighborhood, will I need a car I would prefer not to have one, and how close to transportation am I? I have looked on google maps and it looks like the EL tracks are close but I do not know if there is a station there. If I remember correctly it is the 1500 or 1600 block of N. Dayton.

It should be close to the North/Clybourn Red Line station.

If it's on one of those two blocks of Dayton and it's an actual house, it's almost certainly the 1600 block. Which puts you less than a 5 minute walk to the North/Clyborn stop of the Red Line, and less than a 10 minute walk to the Armitage stop on the Brown Line, pretty much smack in the middle of Lincoln Park, one of the most desirable neighborhoods of Chicago.

And since you have a culinary degree, you might be interested that you'll be within about a 10 minute walk of Alinea, Charlie Trotter's and L2O.

You won't need a car. Close to Red Line, decently close to Brown Line, North & Halsted busses.

That specific area is probably one of the louder and more congested areas of the city. The North/Clybourn area development in the late 90's/00s left a bit to be desired. But as its one of the wealthiest areas in the city, its filled with urban amenities. Since you're getting a good deal on rent, its still a great place to get started.

It OS the 1600 block of Dayton so you see correct. It is a stand alone home and that is good to know that I won't need my car. I would be working either at the hyatt Dowtown, or another place near the french pastry school don't remember the name bit those are the two my chef at school has connections with.
