Well, that is why it's useful to hear a variety of detailed opinions concerning the safety of an area. Visiting an area is always a good idea, but you may go a somewhat sketchy area on a sunny day with no crime, or you may go to a very safe area on a week when they have a string of freak violent crimes. Are opinions somewhat tainted by personal experience? Of course, but if you read enough opinions by people who have experience of an area, and you have half a brain, you can extract the information that is more objective.

Here's my list for figuring out the safety concerns of an area, given the possibility to do all the below:
- Drive around at different time of the day and night when the weather is nice.
- Walk around at different times.
- Search crime blotters for types, location and frequency of crime.
- As specific questions about specific areas on city-data.
- Talk to friends and locals who live in the area.
- Do misc. internet research on the area.

The more info you have the better position you are in to make an informed decision. It's not "one way is better than the other", as far as I'm concerned.

Making decisions about where one will live based on anonymous internetz comments, whether they are from the rose colored glasses crowd or the "entire south and west side" suck crowd is naive at best and stupid at worst
