Also, Mrs O'Learys cow had no part in the genesis of that fire.
678 Orleans was built after the fire. The builder just got the building up in a hurry to beat the new city ordinance banning wood for certain structures.

There were other structures that survived. The buildings just west of the river near the Loop were saved by the river. Others were outside of the burn zone to the north and south. Within the fire zone, some structures did survive. Good link of prominent structures built prior to the fire and their fates here:

1871 Building Directory : chicagology

There are three buildings on that list that survived the fire, and I'm sure there must have been others.

The Water Tower is probably the only building inside the fire zone that is still standing today, however.

Glad you had such a great trip Mo! That's pretty much the way I like to travel - check out the neighborhoods by getting out there and walking all over. You visited my favorite - Lincoln Square.

If you're here over the summer, make sure to check the city's event schedule and take in a neighborhood street fair. Stop by Retro on Roscoe, Taste of Lincoln, Maifest or many of the others. I also did not see too much latino fare on your menu. Try Guatemalan, Venezuelan, Mexican and see how our Cuban compares to what you can get in Miami.

Thanks Amos, good tips. I would like to be there once for the Jazz festival. As for the latin food, I have the feeling it will be better in Chicago. So far I found several cuisines in CHI that were much better and close to the real thing than in So Fla (that goes for Italian, Mediterranean food etc).
And next time I want to see more of Hyde park and South Side.

Nice post. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. Totally happy to see this not turn into "Chicago ain't that great, it's rather bland and mediocre" (because that happens almost every time) when the OP addressed his positive stay.

How can you possibly say things like "almost every time" when you've been a member of this site for less than a month?

Old St. Pat's was built before the fire. Not sure how far the fire spread, though. I love that church!
