I live in Hyde Park and response time from the station on 55th is fine. A roof contractor left our back door smoldering and they arrived in less than five minutes.

Smile response time

I think it depends on what the call is about. I had to call 911 after my landlady's daily drunken instigation got a little too much. She would bang on the door and cuss at me, usually starting at 1am. The next morning, her daughter would apologize and promise it wouldn't happen again. [no, there were no outstanding dues and I am a model tenant]

They came but after about hour and a half. It wasn't an emergency and the veteran officer was a little blunt but his experience showed and got the job done. He spoke to the landlady and she didn't bother me for the next 5 days until I moved out.

She cried when I was moving out my stuff.

You do recall the condo at 53rd and Woodlawn burning down to the walls, close enough to that station to hit it with a rock? In Hyde Park, Kenwood and Woodlawn, police emergency calls are also routed to the University of Chicago Police. In my experience, they arrived first, about 5" after the call was made.

What took the longest for a fire response was explaining it to the 911 dispatcher. I had to tell her: "Look, its in the dumpster, in the alley, behind 5000 South [Woodlawn]. Not at the address from where I'm calling. Got that?"

"CHICAGO -- The police are watching. And in Chicago, they're listening, too.

City officials are using new technology that recognizes the sound of a gunshot within a two-block radius, pinpoints the source, turns a surveillance camera toward the shooter and places a 911 call. Officials can then track the shooter and dispatch officers to the scene.

Welcome to crime-fighting in the 21st century.

"Instead of just having eyes, you have the advantage of both eyes and ears," said Bryan Baker, chief executive officer of Safety Dynamics in Oak Brook, which makes the systems."

And with keeping with the way the City works, it's probably already broken or no one is monitoring it or it's down half the time. Junk technology like this usually is all PR stunts.
