I've been away from Chicago for a long time and neighborhoods have really changed. We're considering three very nice apartments that a friend will be viewing for me this weekend. I'd appreciate your thoughts (especially about safety, gangs, parking, etc.). Thanks in advance!

Sacramento & Montrose
Berteau & Albany
Ashland & Sunnyside

You didn't say whether you were pro- or anti- gang, but none of those locations are really very gang-y. I refuse to address parking on principle. As always, remember that block or two in any direction can make a big difference in how an area "feels" while living there, so with just nearby intersections you'll only get so much info.

1) Not far from the Brown Line. Not far from Lincoln Square. Not far from Albany Park. Otherwise fairly boring. This is probably the location I'd pick if you want some access to city life, but mostly want a quiet neighborhood.

2) 1/4 mile further from the Brown Line and the other areas mentioned for item 1. So even more boring. I wouldn't pick this location unless you plan to only make friends with people who also drive everywhere.

3) Close to Brown Line. Depending on where exactly, this could be your sketchiest location, but still really not bad. Some stuff to do. Nice longish walk to Andersonville from there. Can walk east to Uptown or south to Southport. This is probably the location I'd pick, if you want city life but don't want to be right in the middle of city life. If it's ON Ashland, realize it will be dustier and noisier due to traffic, though.

I live right by Ashland and Sunnyside. It really isn't bad at all. I am on Ashland and Leland just a little bit north of that location. I am also on Ashland, and I agree that it can be loud at times, but remember that the Chicago winters keep your windows closed for roughly 5 months out of the year. It really is a nice location.

I'd go with #3 as well. I'm around that area fairly frequently and agree it isn't bad at all, and is closer to more interesting entertainment, transportation, and shopping options that the others.

Thank you all! That's exactly the kind of info I was hoping for. We're a little older and would probably be considered boring ourselves, so boring is okay with me! I'll go for calm, quiet and safe (safer?) any day. But it's nice to know we can walk to livelier locations if we get TOO bored.
